About Kindling Faith

The Meaning Behind Kindling Faith
The name Kindling Faith comes from a hymn written by Herman Stuempfle, a former president of our seminary. Much like the word “kindling” itself, our program takes on multiple dimensions of meaning:
As a noun – We are part of a 200-year tradition of equipping leaders for ministry in the Lutheran church and beyond.
As an adjective – We begin with small sparks—fragile or uncertain faith—and through learning and community, help nurture something bold, bright, and full of hope.
As a verb – This is our active purpose: We kindle fire in the hearts of those we serve, inspiring them to love God and neighbor in ways that transform the world.
Kindling Faith is more than a name—it’s an invitation to participate in something enduring and transformative.

Mission & Vision
Vision: Harnessing our seminary’s deep roots and resources, we invite people into a lifelong journey of learning and faith—together.
Mission: Kindling Faith is built on a simple truth: learning never ends. We nurture ongoing theological reflection, spiritual growth, and bold leadership for pastors, deacons, lay leaders, and all who seek deeper engagement. Through vibrant community and thoughtful dialogue, we empower faithful responses to today’s challenges—justice, resilience, and compassionate care for our world.
